About the Boxing Kick Shield

A kick shield lets a training partner absorb full-power kicks, knees and body shots safely. It is the bridge between bag work, where nothing moves, and sparring, where you cannot throw at full commitment. For any club running MMA, Muay Thai or kickboxing sessions, a few shields are essential equipment.

This shield uses dense multi-layer foam behind a reinforced synthetic outer, with double-stitched handles set back into the body of the pad so the force of a heavy kick transfers into the holder's frame rather than yanking on their wrists.

Holding it properly

Holding a shield badly is how people get hurt, and the holder is usually the one who suffers. The rules are simple and non-negotiable:

  • Grip both handles and pull the shield firmly into your chest and forearms — never hold it loose or away from your body.
  • Stagger your feet with one leg well back, braced. Square feet mean you go over backwards on the first solid kick.
  • Push slightly into the strike as it lands rather than absorbing passively. Meeting the kick spreads the force.
  • Angle the shield to match the strike — flat for a front kick or knee, tilted for a round kick.
  • Keep your chin tucked behind the top edge and never turn your head away.

What you can train with it

Round kicks, teeps and front kicks, knee strikes in the clinch, and heavy body punching all work on the shield. Because a person is holding it, the target can move, advance and retreat — which is the whole point.

The most valuable drill is the advancing one: the holder walks forward while the striker retreats and kicks, forcing them to create distance under pressure. That is a scenario the heavy bag simply cannot reproduce.

Club and school use

Kick shields take more abuse than almost any other pad, so buy for durability rather than price. Stitching failure at the handle mounts is the usual end of life.

For a club running group classes, budget on roughly one shield per pair of students. WhatsApp us for bulk pricing — we supply martial arts clubs, boxing gyms and school programmes across South Africa. Pair shields with Thai pads for combination work and focus pads for hand accuracy.

Common questions

How do you hold a kick shield safely?

Grip both handles, pull the shield firmly into your chest and forearms, stagger your feet with one leg braced well back, and push slightly into the strike rather than absorbing passively. Keep your chin tucked behind the top edge and never turn your head away.

What is a kick shield used for?

Absorbing full-power kicks, knees, teeps and heavy body punches. Unlike a heavy bag, a person holds it — so the target can advance, retreat and move, which lets you train realistic distance and pressure.

What is the difference between a kick shield and Thai pads?

A kick shield is a large body pad for absorbing full-power kicks and knees. Thai pads are worn on the forearms and are used for combination work mixing punches, elbows and kicks. Most clubs use both.

Do you supply kick shields to clubs in bulk?

Yes. We supply martial arts clubs, boxing gyms and school programmes nationwide. Budget roughly one shield per pair of students and WhatsApp 083 563 2999 for bulk pricing.
