The Crest is a match-standard 156g cricket ball — the regulation weight for men's senior cricket in South Africa and worldwide. Traditional leather construction with a raised stitched seam.
At 156g this is the ball for competitive league and club fixtures, and for senior net sessions where you want players facing the same ball they will meet on a Saturday.
Cricket ball weights explained
Ball weight is set by regulation and varies by age and grade:
- 156g (5.5oz) — Men's senior standard. Regulation for adult competitive cricket.
- 135g (4.75oz) — Women's senior standard and older junior cricket.
- 113g (4oz) — Junior and youth cricket.
Using the correct weight for the age group is a safety matter as much as a regulation one. A senior-weight ball in junior cricket carries considerably more energy than young players are equipped to handle, and it is harder for small hands to grip and bowl properly. Our Club and Blaster balls cover the lighter junior weights.
Looking after a match ball
A leather cricket ball is a consumable, but how it is treated determines whether it lasts one innings or several.
Keep it dry. A wet ball goes soft, the seam softens and the leather loses shape permanently. Dry it gently with a cloth rather than leaving it in the sun, which cracks the leather. Store match balls somewhere cool and dry rather than in a hot car boot or an equipment shed that bakes all summer.
Match ball or practice ball?
Keep match balls for matches. A ball used for a full afternoon of net practice will not behave the same way on a Saturday, and the seam will already have gone.
Use older balls or dedicated practice balls for training, and keep a fresh match ball sealed for the fixture. Clubs that get this wrong end up playing league cricket with a ball that stopped swinging two weeks ago. WhatsApp 083 563 2999 for club and school bulk pricing.
