What the seam does
The raised seam is the most important feature on a cricket ball, and it is what separates a good ball from a cheap one after twenty overs.
A well-defined seam gives the bowler something to grip for seam and swing bowling, and it creates the aerodynamic disturbance that makes the ball move in the air. Once a seam flattens, the ball stops doing anything interesting and becomes a hard object to hit. Balls that hold their seam are worth paying for at club level, because they keep the game alive later into an innings.
Choosing the right weight

Storage and rotation
Store balls cool and dry. Heat dries and cracks leather, damp softens it, and both are permanent. An equipment shed that bakes through a Durban summer will quietly ruin a season's worth of balls.
Run a rotation: new balls for matches, last season's for nets, and retire anything with a soft or split seam. Clubs that keep a proper rotation get considerably better value across a season. Pair with a bat and spring stumps for a full practice setup.
