Traditional cotton karate gloves are the lightest hand protection in the sport. They take the edge off knuckle contact without the bulk of foam mitts, and they are specifically required by a number of traditional karate associations for kumite.
Padded cotton construction with an open palm and an elasticated wrist. Sizes S, M and L.
Cotton or foam?
This is a rules question before it is a preference question. Some traditional associations mandate cotton gloves for competition and will not accept foam mitts; others require foam.
In practical terms, cotton gloves are lighter, cooler and give you more feel for contact. Foam karate mitts protect noticeably better. If your dojo permits both, cotton suits light technical kumite and foam suits harder contact work.
Sizing
Measure hand circumference at the widest part of the palm, excluding the thumb:
- Small — approx. 15–18cm. Juniors.
- Medium — approx. 18–21cm. Teens and most women.
- Large — approx. 21cm and above. Most adult men.
Cotton gloves should fit close. Unlike foam mitts there is no bulk to take up slack, so a loose cotton glove simply slides and stops protecting the knuckle. Note that cotton shrinks slightly with washing, so if you are between sizes, go up.
Washing
Cotton gloves can be washed, which is their main practical advantage over foam. Cold hand wash and hang dry — do not tumble dry, as heat shrinks cotton and will make them unwearable.
Wash them regularly rather than occasionally. They sit against the hand for a full class and cotton holds sweat. Pair them with cotton shin and instep guards for a matched traditional kit.
