The traditional cotton shin and instep guard is the lower-profile alternative to foam padding, and in a number of karate associations it is the only style permitted in competition.
Padded cotton construction covering the shin and wrapping over the instep as one piece, held by an elasticated sleeve. Sizes S, M and L.
Sizing
Measure from just below the knee to the ankle:
- Small — approx. 28–33cm. Juniors and smaller teens.
- Medium — approx. 33–38cm. Teens and most women.
- Large — approx. 38cm and above. Most adult men.
Because these are a pull-on elasticated sleeve rather than a strapped guard, the fit needs to be closer than a foam guard. Too loose and it works its way down the leg during kumite; too tight and it restricts the calf.
Why traditional dojos prefer cotton
Cotton guards are lighter and far less bulky, so they interfere much less with footwork, deep stances and the speed karate depends on.
They also wash properly, which foam guards never really do. The trade-off is protection: cotton takes the sting out of contact but will not absorb a hard shin clash the way foam shin and instep guards will. Check your association's rules before competition, as the two styles are generally not interchangeable.
Care
Cold hand wash and hang dry. Cotton shrinks in heat, so keep them out of the tumble dryer entirely — a shrunk guard becomes a tourniquet on the calf.
Wash after every few sessions. Pair them with cotton karate gloves for a matched traditional kit, and add a gum guard for any contact sparring.
