About the Boxing Shorts

Boxing shorts are cut differently from any other athletic short, and the difference is functional rather than cosmetic. The waistband sits high — above the navel — because that is where a legal punch stops. The leg is cut wide and short so nothing restricts your hips when you pivot, step or throw.

These are made in a lightweight satin-finish polyester with a broad elasticated waistband and side vents. The fabric moves and breathes rather than clinging when you sweat through round six.

Getting the fit right

Sizing runs S to XL. The waistband should sit comfortably high on your abdomen — if you find yourself pulling them down to hip level they are too small, and you will lose the protective landmark the high waist provides.

Shorts should feel slightly loose rather than fitted. Anything that grips the thigh will restrict the pivot on your rear hand, and you will feel it immediately on the bag. When you are between sizes, size up.

Shorts, kickboxing shorts or long pants?

  • Boxing shorts — Standard length, high waist. Correct for boxing competition and training.
  • Kickboxing shorts — Shorter cut with deeper side splits for unrestricted high kicks. Choose these if you kick.
  • Boxing long pants — Full-length, worn in some traditional and amateur settings and popular for cooler-weather training.

If your gym trains both boxing and kickboxing, the kickboxing cut covers you for everything.

Washing

Cold wash, inside out, and hang to dry. Satin-finish polyester will lose its sheen and the waistband elastic will perish if you tumble dry it or wash it hot.

Rinse them out after training rather than leaving them balled up in a kit bag overnight — the same rule that applies to every other piece of gear in that bag.

Common questions

Why do boxing shorts have a high waistband?

The high waist marks the belt line — the legal boundary for punches in boxing. Anything below it is a low blow. The waistband gives both boxers and the referee a clear visual reference.

What size boxing shorts should I buy?

Sizes run S to XL and should sit comfortably high on the abdomen with a slightly loose fit through the leg. Anything that grips the thigh will restrict your pivot. If you are between sizes, size up.

What is the difference between boxing shorts and kickboxing shorts?

Kickboxing shorts are cut shorter with deeper side splits so high kicks are unrestricted. Boxing shorts are longer with a higher waistband. If you kick at all, choose the kickboxing cut.

How should boxing shorts be washed?

Cold wash inside out and hang to dry. Hot washing or tumble drying will damage the satin finish and perish the waistband elastic.
